FINDINGS AND RECCOMMENDATIONS OF THE PEOPLES INTERNATIONAL TRIBUNAL ON THE NUCLEAR POWERS AND THE DESTRUCTION OF CIVILISATION

PRESS CONF MOOT LAW COURT

LAW BUILDING, SYDNEY UNIVERSITY,

TUES 16 AUG 11AM

At 11am on 16 Aug in the Moot Court Room in the Law Building of Sydney University, the Peoples International Tribunal on Nuclear Powers and the Destruction of Civilization will present its findings and recommendations.

This follows two days of hearings on 7th and 8th July at Sydney University.

During those hearings, the possible destruction of civilization and even the potential extinction of humans as a species was canvassed.

Even the defense, who defended the actions and legality of the nuclear weapons states, did not at any point contest that the use of large numbers of nuclear weapons, such as could well take place in a major NATO-Russia conflict, would destroy what we now call civilization in a very short time, would kill most city-living people, and could possibly end humans as a species.

Opinions varied on the actual likelihood of such an event and on how to minimize the likelihood of it taking place.

However the former commanders of both US and Russia's missile forces, and former secretary of Defense William Perry, not to mention the Nobel-heavy advisers of the Doomsday Clock think that the probability of an apocalypse is at least as great as it was in 1983, a year in which the world nearly ended not once but twice.

The tribunal was organized by Prof Peter King of Sydney University who sadly died on 5 Aug, and by John Hallam of People for Nuclear Disarmament (PND)

The release of the findings of the Tribunal, by judges Matt Robson, former NZ Minister of Disarmament, and Dr Keith Suter at 11am Tues 16Aug is thus an event of some significance, which media should not miss.
