US NUCLEAR MISSILES IN AUSTRALIA A THREAT TO AUSTRALIAN SECURITY: 'NUKE HERE, PLEASE'!
US missiles placed on Australian soil would be an automatic target for Chinese, Russian, and North Korean warheads, and would place Australian cities under the threat of incineration, said nuclear disarmament activist John Hallam of People for Nuclear Disarmament (PND) and the Human Survival Project.
According to Mr Hallam:
“It is astonishing and disturbing that the Morrison Government even raised the subject – that it was talked about in any way shape or form. While Minister Reynolds has assured the ABC that no actual request was made to host US nuclear missiles here in Australia, the question must then be asked 'Why, and in what context, if no such request was made, are we even talking about it?'”
“US nuclear missiles would constitute a high-priority target for those at whom the missiles might be aimed, who would themselves aim to 'take out' those missiles before they even launched, via a pre-emptive (or a pre-pre-emptive) strike. The only target in Australia that has an even higher priority as a target are of course, the US communications, early-warning and targeting facility at Pine Gap, and the submarine communications and nuclear targeting facility at North West Cape. These two facilities are amongst the most high priority nuclear targets in the world.”
“The fact that Australia hosts these facilities in turn, means that Australian cities, especially those that like Sydney and Perth contain important military facilities, are also targets. This means that a decision to host US missiles would endanger every Australian.”
“No Australian Government should even consider hosting such facilities.”
“Australia should instead demonstrate is bona fides by signing and ratifying the Nuclear Ban Treaty, and should at a time when the risk of nuclear war is as great as it has ever been, employ its best efforts to promote nuclear risk reduction measures such as de-alerting, no first use, and better (or resumed) military-to-military communication.”
